One of
the most important European countries to have relations with Algeria during the
Ottoman period was the Netherlands, a country that emerged in the early 17th
century following the political and religious conflict in the lowlands under
Spanish rule. The most important characteristic of these relations is the
presence of Dutch consuls in Algiers from 1616 to 1830. However, this Dutch
diplomatic presence in the territory of Algeria does not mean that the
relations between the two countries were in a state of permanent peace, but the
Dutch were sometimes involved with countries Other Europeans in acts of
aggression against the Algerian coast, perhaps from
The
most famous of them was the Anglo-Dutch campaign against Algiers in 1816. Often
the Dutch carried out unilateral military campaigns against Algeria under the
pretext of liberating Dutch prisoners. When relations worsened, they sent
envoys to Algeria to reach armistice agreements and improve relations such as
Cornelis Begnaker and Thomas Hess. This is what we will try to highlight in
this paper.
